People are getting their tickets for concerts and music festivals and artists are dropping new albums that a lot of people are excited about. Notable musicians who have released albums recently are Kendrick Lamar and AWOLNATION. Music festivals, such as Rockfest, are coming up and fans are pumped to rock out.
Kendrick Lamar released his new album “To Pimp a Butterfly” on March 16. Senior Hannah Spencer, senior, said she’s not a fan of the album when comparing it to the rapper’s previous works. “He was too political on his new album and was trying to force the sound too much,” said Spencer. In Spencer’s opinion Lamar “tried to put too much into one album and made it sound like he tried way too hard on this one.” Spencer said that the best song on “To Pimp a Butterfly” is “Alright,” but the album “good kid, m.A.A.d city” is still Kendrick Lamar’s “best work yet.”
On March 17, the band AWOLNATION released their second album “Run.” AWOLNATION makes electronic rock music and is known for songs such as “Sail” from their previous album and “Hollow Moon” is currently the most popular song from the new album. Sophomore Kyle Polson noted that he misses the band’s old sound and that “Run” doesn’t give the same type of feeling or flow as before. Polson said that a couple of songs on the album have meaning, but overall “it seems like a money grab.”
Junior Rebecca Nowicke says she enjoys every song in the album and said, “It’s like every song is my favorite, [and] I think the entire album is pretty good.”
One festival that Audubon students go to is Rockfest. It is the largest music event for its genre of music in the United States and will be visiting the Westfair Amphitheater in Council Bluffs. Polson has been to Rockfest twice and said, “It’s really fun and you get a better work out there than you will ever get in gym.”
Nowicke plans on going to Rockfest for the first time this year and said, “I can’t wait to go because I’ve never gone to something like it before.”
