Every time the school cafeteria serves applesauce, which is about two times a week, there is a buzz of excitement and disgust whirling in the air around the back lunch table. As more of Mr. Logan Holmes’ friends sit down to eat, the anticipation grows and grows as they wait for him to take his seat. When they finally catch a glimpse of him standing in the lunch line, they begin to gather their cups of the mushy sauce together and place them at his spot on the table. The stack equates to about eight cups of applesauce, which is not nearly enough to break his record. When Holmes finally arrives at his place, he sits and adds his own applesauce to the stack, making nine. As the sophomore eats his lunch, his pals search the lunchroom and start scavenging for any uneaten cups. Their hunt is fruitful, resulting in four more cups. Adding those to the large stack makes thirteen, which is just enough to break his record of twelve cups eaten in one sitting. After Holmes finishes eating his entrée, he starts to go to town on the cups. The first half goes down easily, but the last few cups prove to be a challenge. As his pace slows and his stomach grows with applesauce, he feels sick and contemplates giving up. However, his schoolmates cheer him on, and he finds the inner strength to swallow those last few bites; with those bites, he breaks his old record of twelve. And with that, Logan Holmes will be forever labeled “The Applesauce King.”
