The time has come for the All-State Large Group Speech Festival, or "The Big Dance" as Audubon speech team members like to call it. Two groups have made it to the coveted competition in Ames, Iowa at Iowa State University: Choral Reading’s "Edgar Allan Poe and the Toasters" and TV News’s "KMoo News." All-State is the biggest speech competition in the state; Audubon's Choral Reading is considered one of the top 20 in the state and their TV news is in the top 12. The students who are performing are ecstatic, and even the speechers who are not performing are thrilled to go.
“I’m pretty excited. I haven’t made it to All-State before, so we’ll see how it goes," senior Shawn Hemmingsen said.
Junior Mitchell Nelsen said, “It’s great, because I’ve never been there before, so it’ll be an exciting new experience.”
Both Choral Reading and TV News will be performing, but since TV News is in a digital form, they only re-filmed about 5 seconds of footage and edited some text.
However, since Choral Reading is a live performance, it needs to be as polished as possible. Nelsen said, “Everyone bought into choral this year. At practices we got down to business.”
Hemmingsen said, “The script is good, and the blending at State was good too, along with other choral stuff.”
Everyone has worked hard to get this far in speech, and everyone is very happy with the success they’ve achieved.
