This year’s Black Friday will take place on Nov. 29. However, some stores are starting to open on Thanksgiving night. Night Owls can get started as early as 6:00 p.m. at Wal-Mart on Thanksgiving. With earlier opening times, pre-sales, and online shopping, does the true Black Friday still exist?
According to Blackfriday.com, "Black Friday started in the 1960s as the kick off to the Christmas shopping season. "Black" refers to stores moving from the "red" to the "black," back when accounting records were kept by hand, and red ink indicated a loss, and black a profit. Ever since the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in 1924, the Friday after Thanksgiving has been known as the unofficial start to a bustling holiday shopping season." Many stores like Wal-Mart, Target, JCPenny’s, Sears and Kohl's are known for opening very early. The shoppers that wake up early or even stay up all night lining up outside the store doors are referred to as Early Birds. According to Wikipedia, for stores like Wal Mart, Black Friday is known to be able to "boost their year to date net profit from $14 billion to $19 billion."
