On Jan. 24, District Large Group Speech will be held at Audubon High School. There will be 28 different schools from the Southwest Iowa area performing that day.
Many emotions will be running throughout the Audubon speech team about hosting districts. Some of the students are enthusiastic about hosting as this gives the team a home turf advantage. They will also be able to sleep in as opposed to getting on a bus at 4:30 a.m. to head to contest. Logan Holmes, a sophomore, said, “I think it’s awesome! We don’t have to get up as early! We [also] have more time to get ready, and I know where everything in the school is.”
Other students are not as excited. They will miss the long, but fun, bus rides and are not looking forward to helping out at contest instead of watching other groups and goofing off with their friends after their performances. Daniel Thoelke, a junior, said “I think it will be fun, but I’m not excited about having to work.” Luckily, the team has many parent, alumni, and community volunteers to help make the contest a success.
There are also differing emotions about performing. Many of the seniors on the team are ready to compete and are hoping to go out with a bang. Senior Shawn Hemmingsen said, “I am really excited! I hope that Choral [Reading] gets farther than it did last year.”
Opposite of that, some of the kids who have never been on the team are nervous to go out on the stage. Junior and first time “speecher” Becca Nowicke said, “It’s really scary, but really exciting. I was in the 'Beauty and the Beast' musical so I kind of know what it’s like.”
