The Audubon dance team, coached by Lynn Spies, will be going to the Iowa State Championships in Des Moines at Hy-Vee Hall and Wells Fargo Arena on December 4th. They will be performing lights, all-male and co-ed dances. Both girls and boys on the team spend an abundance of their time before and after school practicing to reach their goal of a Division 1 rating or a place in the top 5 performances.
Along with all the hard training they do, Morgan Gust, a senior on the dance team, says, “Our team bonding usually just consists of us all baking and then bringing it to practice and we pig out.” As the girls get to know one another they find themselves getting along really well with each other even though they aren’t close outside of dance. As Gust performs in Wells Fargo she says the adrenaline rush is her favorite part. Jonah Kitt, a senior on the team, says that he enjoys everything about dance team. From the practices to the bonds that are made, Kitt loves being apart of the Audubon dance team.
Lynn Spies has been coaching for 21 years. She says, “[The dancers] are a very talented group. They are hard working and when they come to practice they always… have lots of ideas.” Her favorite part about taking her team to state is being able to see all the talent that is performed by high school students across Iowa. Spies has put a lot of her time into the preparation for State Dance. Holding practices on Tuesday through Thursday and Sunday, she pushes the dancers to be the best they can be.
