Rackets are being dusted off and bright yellow tennis balls are being bounced around. It’s finally the time for the tennis teams to head out to the tennis courts and begin a new season.
This year the girls have a new tennis coach, Ms. Messerschmidt. While she has not coached tennis before, she has coached volleyball and assisted with basketball practice. Messerschmidt also teaches 5th grade and coached the 6th grade AAU volleyball team. “I have really enjoyed coaching the girls so far, they’re a great group. I hope to coach as long as I can,” said Messerschmidt.
“I really like the new tennis coach! She’s pretty great, and is very understanding!” exclaims Morgan Gust, a junior who has been in tennis throughout all of high school. This year there are eight girls on the team, they host Corning April 22.
Coaching the boys tennis team for the fifth year, Mr. Thoelke plans to work harder on hitting ground strokes to penetrate the wind during practice to try to keep the opponent away from the net. He enjoys coaching tennis and he doesn’t have any plans to stop any time soon.
Many students, including Daniel Schneider, think that Mr. Thoelke is a great coach and has an amazing understanding of tennis. Schneider said, “This is actually my first year in tennis, my dad used to do tennis when he was in high school so I decided to give it a try.” Since the girls host, the boys will travel to Corning on April 22.
Maddie Christensen, a senior, has been in tennis since freshman year and has been in summer recreational tennis since she was in 1st grade. Christensen is thinking about playing intramural tennis, but not competitively after high school. Many students from both boys and girls tennis teams enjoy being in tennis and look forward to a great season.
