For those that have been keeping up with the wrestling team at Audubon High School, one would know that this year has not been an easy one. From a drastic drop in wrestlers to many injuries, it’s been a hard road for the wrestling team, but somehow they still managed to come out on top. This year the team had four district qualifiers: seniors Andrew Malloy, Trevor Smith, Brad Kerkhoff, and junior Jake Mulford. All but Malloy qualified for the State Wrestling tournament which began on Feb. 19.
This season, a lot of the boys had to step up and be leaders. “This season taught me that people don’t do things so well without leadership so sometimes you have to step up to help people,” said senior Andrew Malloy. That’s just what the four wrestlers qualifying for districts did.
Due to the loss of many wrestlers this year, it would have been easy for the team to not persevere, but Malloy said, “The people that come to see us wrestle and take the time out of their day to come see us makes me excited. We have lots of people watching our team.” It's what kept the team going.
Surely a lot of people were watching on Saturday, Feb. 14 for Districts, where three out of the four wrestlers advanced to State. Brad Kerkhoff and Jake Mulford both placed first while Trevor Smith placed second. Andrew Malloy was shy of making State with one placing; he finished third. All three wrestlers wrestled at The Well on Thursday, Feb. 19. Jake Mulford's goal for State: “I want to make my family and friends proud. I want to place higher than I did last year and make people scared or nervous to wrestle me next year.”
The Well will be filled with Audubon Wheeler supporters this weekend as the boys face the toughest opponents they’ll have all year. As this season comes to a close, one thing is for sure, even with obstacles thrown their way, the Audubon Wrestling team comes out on top, just like always.
