Junior Dustin Mennenoh’s Thanksgiving tradition is to just spend time with family and eat a lot of food. Thanksgiving dinner take’s place at Mennenoh's house; his grandmother from his mom’s side joins them, along with all close relatives from his dad’s side. His favorite food on the table is the deviled eggs. Dessert follows dinner and Mennenoh’s favorite is the classic, homemade pumpkin pie. Dustin sums up Thanksgiving to be a fattening holiday.
The Friday after Thanksgiving…AKA Black Friday comes afterward. Freshman Whitney Petersen’s eyes lit up when she heard the words Black Friday shopping. She and her family stay in Des Moines in a hotel the night before and wake up around 5 or 6 in the morning to shop for the whole day! Her favorite stores to go to are Scheels and Younkers. Besides buying cute clothes on sale, Petersen shares the wealth buying toys for Christmas presents for her younger siblings. Black Friday shopping can get expensive; how much is spent depends on how good of a deal it is.
For the past couple years stores have opened up their grand Black Friday deals a day earlier on Thanksgiving. Petersen has mixed feelings on this. She thinks it’s good so people can get into stores to shop earlier, but bad because some of the good finds would be gone. Another issue with Black Friday beginning on Thanksgiving is retail workers losing time to spend with their families on the holiday.
